I Can't Make This Stuff Up

Our family was driving to run errands and we decided to grab a bite to eat. We asked our daughter if she wanted to go to Applebee's or to Sonic. She replied with, "Payton wants to go to Applebee's." My husband then asked her why she was speaking in the third person. Without skipping a beat, she replies with, "you're a third person."

I asked my daughter to go upstairs and get ready for bed. She gave me a dirty look and told me that she didn't want to. I told her that if she wants to continue to give me a dirty look, she could just stay upstairs after getting ready for bed. She walked away and started going upstairs. She turned around on the landing of the stairs and still has a dirty look on her face. I give her a stern look in return to which she all of a sudden gives a little angelic smile with the slightest tilt of her head as if to say, "aren't I so cute mom." She is 3.5 years old; can't wait for those teenager years.

Living in the Northeast, we have gotten a lot of snow. Adam and I were talking about how the snow would be great if we could take both kids skiing, however, our youngest is only 15 months old. Our daughter overheard this and said that she'd like to go skiing but that she didn't know how to ski. I told her, "no problem, I can teach you." Her immediate response, "no, I want someone else to teach me." Thanks kiddo!

took my 3-year-old daughter to Beauty and the Beast as part of a girls' day. We had taken her to plays before this (Shrek and Annie), but this was her first time with just the two of us. She had a wonderful time and absolutely loved the play. As we were getting into the car, she says, "mom, there was no tooting." I asked her what he was talking about. She told me that Beauty and the Beast didn't toot like Shrek and Fiona. Then she told me that she liked the tooting part but that Beauty's dress was beautiful. I wonder if she'd like Beauty and the Beast even more if there had been toots?

Most of these stories are about my daughter, who is just Trouble with a capital "T." My son, who is only 15 months does sometimes get in on the act though too. When my daughter is at preschool, I have lots of time to get chores done. My son can often be found playing nicely by himself or chasing the dog around. Yesterday morning, while washing dishes, I hear a familiar voice that sounds too close for comfort. I turn to my left to see what he's up to, and I am face to face with my son. He is beaming with pride that he climbed from the chair, to the kids' table, and up onto the counter. I guess it's time to rearrange the room again!

Sometimes, It's More Than a Game

Adam and I love taking our kids to sporting events. That is one reason why we are loving being here at West Point. We can take our kids to a variety of events from football and lacrosse to women's basketball and men's gymnastics to hockey and sprint football. We get to expose them to so many things that we may not have been able to elsewhere. With some of the sports, we can teach them about the game while we are there. For other sports, we get to learn about them together. Payton and Adam with Mr. Fulton at the West Point Open From a very young age (3 and 1), we are getting the opportunity to expose our kids to sports and competition. And sometimes, there is a moment where everything comes together. Yesterday, we went as a family to the Patriot League Women's Basketball Championship where Army played Holy Cross. We left the house very early to grab a quick bite to eat, and then headed for the game about an hour early. We had amazing seats in the second row behind the...

We Love Girl Scout Daisies!

After two years as Girl Scout Daisies (Kindergarten and First Grade), it's time for our girls to become Brownies! For their Bridging requirements, they had to do complete two steps. The first requirement was for the Girls to 'Pass It On.' We decided to take this step into the modern era of computers and technology and share our love of Daisies with you through a blog. The second, in case you were wondering, was to 'Look Ahead.' After we finished our blog, the girls got a taste of some of the activities they will do as Girl Scout Brownies over the next two years. During their time as Daisies, the girls worked on their Petals, Leaves, Journeys, and Fun Patches. Some girls were with us for two years and some just three months. They met every other week to do crafts, play games, work on service projects and so much more. It has been a fun adventure as you will see from their varied answers. Just like we had flower friends that we followed during Daisies, like Rosie ...
